At MMC Surgery, residents progressively build their surgical skills while taking on increasing levels of responsibility, all within a supportive learning environment guided by our distinguished faculty and staff. Under the direct supervision of senior residents, fellows, and faculty surgeons, trainees rotate through diverse clinical teams, gaining exposure to a wide spectrum of surgical practice. Rotations are structured in four-week blocks and include:

• General Surgery
• Colorectal Surgery
• Pediatric Surgery
• Trauma and Acute Care Surgery
• Surgical Intensive Care Unit
• Transplantation Surgery
• Surgical Oncology
• Thoracic Surgery
• Vascular Surgery
• Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery

This breadth of clinical experience ensures comprehensive training across all major surgical disciplines, preparing residents to provide high-quality, patient-centered care while developing the judgment and leadership skills essential for independent practice.

Years 1 and 2: Foundational Training
The first two years at MMC surgery focus on developing a strong foundation in perioperative care and core surgical skills, with progressive increases in operative responsibility. Early exposure to surgical consults allows residents to gain confidence in the evaluation, workup, and management of surgical patients across a wide spectrum of disease processes.

Year 3: Assistant Chief
During the third year, residents assume greater responsibility, spending significant time functioning as assistant chief residents on core services and even serving as chief residents on select rotations such as Pediatric Surgery and Trauma Surgery. In this role, they supervise junior residents, contribute to the education of medical students, and refine their clinical decision-making while continuing to build operative experience. Importantly, third-year residents also have the opportunity to rotate in Transplant Surgery at either Mount Sinai or Northwell, further enhancing their exposure to complex surgical care.

Years 4 and 5: Junior and Senior Chief
By the fourth and fifth years, residents take on senior leadership responsibilities under close faculty mentorship. Fourth-year residents also rotate at the world-renowned R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland, gaining invaluable experience in high-acuity trauma care. Chief residents oversee the administration of their service, supervise and mentor junior residents, organize and lead conferences, and direct pre- and post-operative patient care. They are also responsible for surgical planning and performing major operative procedures under the supervision of faculty.

These experiences provide MMC surgery trainees with the advanced knowledge, technical expertise, and leadership skills required to excel in fellowship, achieve board certification, and establish a strong and well-rounded clinical practice.
