Emergency Care is a specialty that requires extraordinary training and education. The program at Maimonides has been developed to provide a unique educational opportunity to assure that our graduates are highly qualified and extremely competent physicians. We achieve this goal by offering a diversified program, both clinically and educationally. It is the acuity of our patients, the support of our surrounding communities, and the dedication of our faculty that distinguish us from other programs.
The General Surgery Residency Program provides extensive, hands-on clinical experience with the busy and expanding surgical services of the hospital. Training is provided by nationally renowned faculty in all subspecialty fields.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program offers an outstanding opportunity to train in a dynamic, tertiary care referral center. Maimonides is the Brooklyn campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. This affiliation enriches the training of our residents and help to create an academic milieu superior to other community teaching hospitals. In addition, the exposure to a unique, highly diverse patient population, enables our residents to become expert internal medicine physicians, well-prepared to handle any and all patients upon graduation.
Maimonides boasts a long history of training excellence. Our graduates have gone on to careers in all the OB/GYN subspecialties, as well as general academic and private practices. Many graduates still practice at Maimonides, which is a testament to the type of workplace we are and the care we give our patients.
We are particularly proud of our Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and training, our Ryan Program in Family Planning, our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship. We train six categorical residents per year, and one fellow per year in the two fellowships.
Maimonides Orthodontics prides itself on providing a broad clinical experience together with excellent didactic instruction. Orthodontic residents receive their training from board certified and eligible attending staff. First year residents participate in weekly rotations to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kings County Hospital. In addition, the orthodontic residents actively participate in the monthly orthognathic and cleft palate conferences, which are held in conjunction with the oral surgery program at Kings County Hospital.
Welcome to the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center. The faculty members of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program are committed to the education of residents with the goal of preparing them to be well-qualified, independent specialists in orthopedics. Our role as educators is to instill residents with those traits which are essential to success, including honesty, integrity, objectivity, self-motivation, curiosity and a sense of responsibility. To this end, we strive to graduate residents who not only are expert surgeons, but who are capable of becoming leaders in the field. This is evidenced by the large percentage of our residents who pursue academic careers.
The Pediatric Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center offers an outstanding faculty under the leadership of the Chair of Pediatrics Jeffrey Avner and Program Director Ingrid Walker-Descartes MD, MPH. Coupled with a dedicated and renowned array of faculty, the department fosters a philosophy that embraces education in a clinical environment based on “family-centered” care. This emphasis on training will provide a sound basis for understanding the importance of building and maintaining strong patient-family-physician relations, which are critical to high-quality pediatric care.
The Psychiatric Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center offers a comprehensive, collaborative and enjoyable experience in psychiatry training. The distinctive curriculum includes training in all mental health and psychiatric care settings including, adult inpatient services, outpatient services, community day treatment, child and adolescent services, substance abuse, psychosomatic medicine, community outreach, and emergency psychiatry. We offer many opportunities for research and scholarly activities. Our residents enter competitive subspecialty fellowships in all fields. Graduates of our program become expert clinicians able to practice in any adult setting.
The goal of the Radiology Residency Program is to train highly qualified radiology physicians who are capable of skillfully utilizing all the various imaging modalities available for the purpose of accurate and efficient diagnosis. Competence in interventional procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic, is stressed. This is achieved by emphasizing the resident’s role as both apprentice and student, and the attending physician’s role as mentor and teacher.
Maimonides offers a six-year residency program in urologic surgery, including one year of general surgery internship, one year of urologic research, and four years of clinical training in urology. Our curriculum is intended to train residents in all aspects of urologic care and to be future leaders in the field, while fostering a collegial atmosphere and a dedicated work ethic.
Our pharmacy residency programs strive to provide the best educational experience in an environment balanced between academic, and clinical activities. Residents are afforded the opportunity to advance their clinical knowledge, strengthen their leadership and communication skills and prepare to become skilled independent pharmaceutical care practitioners through individualized learning experiences.
