Emergency Medicine is a specialty that requires extraordinary training and education. The program at Maimonides has been developed to provide a unique educational opportunity to assure that our graduates are highly qualified and extremely competent physicians. The General Surgery Residency Program provides extensive, hands-on clinical experience with the busy and expanding surgical services of the hospital. Training is provided by nationally renowned faculty in all subspecialty fields.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program offers an outstanding opportunity to train in a dynamic, tertiary care referral center. Maimonides is the Brooklyn campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. This affiliation enriches the training of our residents and help to create an academic milieu superior to other community teaching hospitals. In addition, the exposure to a unique, highly diverse patient population, enables our residents to become expert internal medicine physicians, well-prepared to handle any and all patients upon graduation.
Maimonides boasts a long history of training excellence. Our graduates have gone on to careers in all the OB/GYN subspecialties, as well as general academic and private practices. Many graduates still practice at Maimonides, which is a testament to the type of workplace we are and the care we give our patients.
We are particularly proud of our Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and training, our Ryan Program in Family Planning, our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship. We train six categorical residents per year, and one fellow per year in the two fellowships.
Maimonides Orthodontics prides itself on providing a broad clinical experience together with excellent didactic instruction. Orthodontic residents receive their training from board certified and eligible attending staff. First year residents participate in weekly rotations to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kings County Hospital. In addition, the orthodontic residents actively participate in the monthly orthognathic and cleft palate conferences, which are held in conjunction with the oral surgery program at Kings County Hospital.
Welcome to the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center. The faculty members of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program are committed to the education of residents with the goal of preparing them to be well-qualified, independent specialists in orthopedics. Our role as educators is to instill residents with those traits which are essential to success, including honesty, integrity, objectivity, self-motivation, curiosity and a sense of responsibility. To this end, we strive to graduate residents who not only are expert surgeons, but who are capable of becoming leaders in the field. This is evidenced by the large percentage of our residents who pursue academic careers.
The Pediatric Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center offers an outstanding faculty under the leadership of the Chair of Pediatrics Jeffrey Avner and Program Director Ingrid Walker-Descartes MD, MPH. Coupled with a dedicated and renowned array of faculty, the department fosters a philosophy that embraces education in a clinical environment based on “family-centered” care. This emphasis on training will provide a sound basis for understanding the importance of building and maintaining strong patient-family-physician relations, which are critical to high-quality pediatric care.
The Psychiatric Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center offers a comprehensive, collaborative and enjoyable experience in psychiatry training. The distinctive curriculum includes training in all mental health and psychiatric care settings including, adult inpatient services, outpatient services, community day treatment, child and adolescent services, substance abuse, psychosomatic medicine, community outreach, and emergency psychiatry. We offer many opportunities for research and scholarly activities. Our residents enter competitive subspecialty fellowships in all fields. Graduates of our program become expert clinicians able to practice in any adult setting.
The Radiation Oncology Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center provides an extensive curriculum designed to cultivate proficient and compassionate radiation oncologists who are deeply committed to providing exceptional patient care. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, our program emphasizes experiential education, progressive clinical responsibilities, and immersive didactic learning, all with a strong focus on research. Teachings and training sessions cover essential topics in modern oncology practice.
The goal of the Radiology Residency Program is to train highly qualified radiology physicians who are capable of skillfully utilizing all the various imaging modalities available for the purpose of accurate and efficient diagnosis. Competence in interventional procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic, is stressed. This is achieved by emphasizing the resident’s role as both apprentice and student, and the attending physician’s role as mentor and teacher.
Maimonides offers a six-year residency program in urologic surgery, including one year of general surgery internship, one year of urologic research, and four years of clinical training in urology. Our curriculum is intended to train residents in all aspects of urologic care and to be future leaders in the field, while fostering a collegial atmosphere and a dedicated work ethic.
The Maimonides Medical Center Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program is a 5-year program designed to prepare vascular surgeons to provide personalized, comprehensive, high quality vascular care. Through graded and progressive responsibility, the resident will build upon 2 years of general surgery residency education, followed by 3 years of vascular specific training to develop proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic systems.
Our pharmacy residency programs strive to provide the best educational experience in an environment balanced between academic, and clinical activities. Residents are afforded the opportunity to advance their clinical knowledge, strengthen their leadership and communication skills and prepare to become skilled independent pharmaceutical care practitioners through individualized learning experiences.
Maimonides Breast Center was founded in 2006 and is the only fully accredited Breast Center in Brooklyn, NY.
Maimonides was awarded Full Accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), administered by the American College of Surgeons, placing it among an elite 5% of programs in the nation.
In addition, we are the first and only Brooklyn-based program of its kind to be designated an American College of Radiology Center of Excellence in multiple areas: mammography, ultrasound, MRI of the breast, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound biopsy and MRI biopsy.
The Cardiology Fellowship Program operates within the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Institute, one of the most comprehensive centers its kind in the nation. As an authority in the field, we set the standard in diagnosing, treating, caring for, and educating patients with heart disease. Thousands of patients from Brooklyn, the greater New York metropolitan area, and across the country are treated here each year. The Center offers a rapidly growing number of diagnostic studies and therapeutic treatments, procedures, and surgeries. Residents of this program benefit from the interdisciplinary, comprehensive and innovative care offered at the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Institute.
In partnership with New York University (NYU)-Bellevue Hospital, Maimonides is accepting fellowship applications for our three-year ACGME accredited Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship. This fellowship unites the existing services at both institutions to provide a comprehensive three-year experience designed to prepare physicians for an academic and clinical career in child abuse pediatrics. Fellows interested in a career in Child Abuse Pediatrics with an emphasis on research and clinical practice is encouraged to apply.
The Division of Critical Care Medicine offers a one-year training program in critical care medicine and is fully accredited by the ACGME. Four fellows are trained annually in the state-of-the-art ICUs at Maimonides Medical Center.

The Division of Research at Maimonides Medical Center is dedicated to the science and understanding of emergency, acute care, and critical care medicine with a particular emphasis on health services and outcomes. The focus of our research initiatives are: emergency department operations, biomedical/clinical, trauma/injury, pre-hospital/emergency medical services, and emergency medicine education. The division’s original research work has been presented at major national and international scientific and clinical forums, and published in premier scientific journals. In addition, it has several funded projects that are actively underway.
Emergency Ultrasonography is well-integrated into the curriculum of the Emergency Medicine Residency at Maimonides. Residents spend 4 weeks in each of their first two years on an ultrasound rotation. During the rotation, residents participate in small group scan shifts with faculty members and fellows from the Emergency Ultrasound Division, as well as weekly ultrasound review/QA sessions. This combination allows the residents to become proficient in performing and interpreting a wide array of point-of-care ultrasounds.
The Gastroenterology Fellowship provides the fellow with a unique educational opportunity to develop skills necessary to become an expert clinician in the specialty of gastroenterology. Our program aspires to teach fellows the necessary humanistic qualities, attitudes and interpersonal skills—as well as the requisite clinical knowledge—that serve to foster an appropriate patient-physician relationship. The fellowship assures a well-rounded experience in all care settings – inpatient, outpatient and private practice, with an additional opportunity to perform clinical research in the field.

Fellowship training in our Geriatric Program is ACGME approved and offers the participant experience in a dynamic, expanding program that is innovative, professional and enjoyable. The Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship offers a dynamic program providing comprehensive exposure to all aspects of gynecologic oncology. The program aims to equip trainees with the skills to deliver exceptional clinical care in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gynecologic malignancies. Training emphasizes refining both surgical and medical skills essential for the comprehensive management of patients diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. Furthermore, the program establishes a robust foundation for trainees aspiring to forge careers in academia and research.
The goal of our fellowship is to develop excellent clinical consultants. Opportunities to participate in both clinical and laboratory research are integral to that goal. Divisional teaching faculty has diverse interests spanning the range of classical hematology, solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and palliative and supportive care.
Maimonides has a highly diverse patient mix which provides our fellows with an excellent clinical education. Patients are seen in consultation for a broad range of infectious disease problems. Consultations range from infections in the elderly and opportunistic infections of the immune-compromised patient, to classic infections such as endocarditis, hepatitis, malaria and tuberculosis. Patients are seen weekly in the outpatient Infectious Diseases Clinic or in division facilities. Fellows have an opportunity to see patients on the Travel Medicine Service and to provide primary care to an HIV-infected adult patient population.

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center aims to train fellows in managing high-risk pregnancies through extensive clinical exposure and advanced procedural training. With a high volume of diverse deliveries and the only Perinatal Regional Center in Brooklyn, fellows gain expertise in ultrasound, diagnostic procedures, and obstetrical surgeries. Additionally, the fellowship emphasizes clinical research, encouraging fellows to contribute to highly cited journals and present at national conferences, ensuring they become experts in the field.
The Medical Education Fellowship through the Department of Emergency Medicine is a two-year fellowship designed to advance knowledge and skills in a variety of areas pertinent to medical education. While working part-time as an ED attending, the fellow will complete a Master’s degree program in education, while also participating in on-site educational activities. The fellow will participate in a variety of educational research projects and will have the opportunity to train with other attendings who have subspecialty training in many relevant areas. The fellow will be supported to attend a variety of local, regional and national conferences pertinent to medical education.
The Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center aims to develop proficiency in complex gynecology through high-volume surgical experience, clinical research, and comprehensive education. As the largest healthcare system and robotic surgery center in Brooklyn, Maimonides performs over one thousand surgeries annually, including four hundred robotic procedures. This two-year fellowship program, affiliated with SUNY Downstate Medical Center, ensures fellows are skilled in a range of minimally invasive techniques, including vaginal, laparoscopic, robotic, operative hysteroscopic, oncologic, urogynecologic, and REI procedures, while providing health and dental insurance, educational allowances, and structured call requirements.
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) fellowship program at Maimonides Medical Center is the first accredited PEM fellowship in Brooklyn, NY. The fellowship is designed for emergency medicine or pediatric physicians who desire subspecialty training leading to certification in pediatric emergency medicine. The PEM fellowship is housed in the Department of Emergency Medicine with significant support from the Department of Pediatrics at the Maimonides Infants & Children’s Hospital.
The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program at Maimonides Medical Center is a fully approved, three-year ACGME fellowship program. The program provides the fellow with exceptional experience to diagnose and manage endocrine diseases and to understand the physiology of hormonal regulation, metabolic pathways and nutritional implications on growth and development.
The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program was formed in 2013 and is the first program of its kind in Brooklyn and one of the first in New York City. This fellowship is designed to provide additional training relevant to the practice of PHM in both academic and community hospital settings. This one-year fellowship is structured as a mentored junior attending year to provide the benefits of autonomous practice experience while being fully supported by a group of dedicated pediatric hospitalist attendings. In addition, ample “non-service” time is afforded to provide additional supervised experience in the care of critically ill children and chronically ill children in a subacute/chronic facility setting, as well as procedural sedation, medical education, and quality improvement.
